Babylon: Art and Legend

The Tower of Baylon, Peter Breughel the Elder, 1563, Google Arts Project

One of the greatest cities in the ancient world vanished for over 2000 years and was the stuff of myths and legends. Biblical accounts include The Tower of Babel, Daniel in the Lion’s Den, the Whore of Babylon and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. This lecture looks at art inspired by these and at the real Babylon as explored and excavated since the nineteenth century.
